Research for Henry

Henry Barnes is a student on the Level 3 music performance and production course. He asked to work with me and assist him with his Final Major Project (FMP). He is releasing an EP along with a music video and wants to create his own record label. He asked me to help with the promotion, filming and help him with the label. He'd also like me to create a website for his label under the name mellow moon. Within this I will also help create merch, I will be doing the art for this with him finalising what he'd like.

Music Video

So the music video is for his newest song which is 50s style. This means it's going to be a 50s style video. I will be filming and editing the video and art directing. I put together a mood board for inspiration.

Alongside the music video there will have to be promotion. This will also follow the 50s theme. I love the way the 50s film posters are styled, so I am going to create promotional material that looks like 50s posters.

I saw this clip on my instagram (@filmuseum) and it inspired me. I love the sunset silhouette shots so I sent this to Henry and he agreed that it was a good idea. I watched a youtube video to teach me how to create these shots well (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7MqiBO10HDE&t=64s) and will do some test shots at home so I can do them well for the video.

PROPS

Henry has already bought a microphone similar to this for the video as it is 50s style. He is also looking at getting a 50s style phone. My dad has a 70s Aston Martin which isn't 50s themed but it's a vintage car so we will be using that for the video. Henry will also be smoking a straight cigarette in the video as that is sometimes seen in 50s photos. Henry has bought a green screen as well as a black sheet and a white one with some lights and stands so we can get some cool shots of him.

Record Label

Henry wanted some help to create a micro label. He has the name 'Mellow Moon Music' in mind. We have already sketched up some images to go with this for a logo. (insert) These logos were also gonna be made into some merchandise for the label. We were going to make polos and tees potentially through AWESOMEMERCHANDISE.COM. However I spoke to Rob Watson who has his own artist studio on the beach and he produces tshirts for poetic bisons, he recommended a shop to get embroidery and printing done as it's where he gets all his stuff done.

I watched this video for research before I launch anything to do with the record label. It had heaps upon heaps of information that is going to help me.

NOTES ON THE VIDEO:

First thing: Picking a name (Mellow Moon Music)

- Keep it short and simple

- Use NAMECHECKR to check the availability across all platforms

- Have the same username across all platforms

- Test the name in a Google search. See how much comes up and what you'll be competing with. You may need to add another word to put you apart from other people.

- Don't overthink it, just pick what feels right.

Make a Logo and a Brand

- Have a black and white version of the logo as well as a colour one. Therefore the focus is on the artists not the branding, you're not a label without the artists.

- Hire an artist if you can't do it yourself. (I can or my brother can as he is doing graphic design)

- If it's sketched and scanned onto a computer make sure it's a PNG file so it has a transparent background.

- Come up with brand colours, black and white is the most common for labels, this guy recommends no more than 2 colours. Make sure these colours remain consistent, try not to change logos from the beginning so when people picture it they think of your one logo.

Building an Online Presence

- Once you've decided on a name register your name on as many domains as possible. Try to have the same handle on every social media.

- When you make a website it would be good to buy a domain but you don't have to rush into this

- What does your website need?

  • Bio (short): Tell the audience what type of music, your geographical location and why you began the label.

  • Artists: Have links to their social medias, music and merchandise.

  • Quick link to a label playlist (music from your artists) Make it accessible on the website so they don't have to quit to find it (embed it)

  • Store for merchandise and music this may be a link to bandcamp.

  • Contact info in the bio (perhaps to accept other artist demos)

  • Social media links

  • Use WIX to build a website (there are other options but I know WIX)

  • Use Bandcamp for artists music because artists get profits.

Define Your Label

- First you have to define audience:

  • What genres or subgenres do they like

  • What formats do they like (Streaming or CDs, Vinyl. Make sure you know this before you print loads of vinyls)

  • How do they listen to music?

  • Did they discover your music through playlists, on the radio or social media

  • Where do they go to find new music?

THIS IS IMPORTANT! WHEN YOU KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE YOU CAN COMMUNICATE WITH THEM BETTER!

- Next define your goals:

  • Explicit goals: like profit or total audience growth yearly.

  • Implicit goals: Relationships with artists, ethics, personal

  • Audacious goals (something that would make you happy): A review from a top music mag? Selling 1000 records for example

- Create a mission statement: A 2-3 sentence statement that says who you are, why you exist and what you aim to do. This is important for the bands you sign so they can see what you want to do, what your ethics are and who you are as a label. It's good for fans and press also to see who you are and why the label exists.

Signing New Bands

- Where to find them?

  • You could use friends or friends of friends: Sign yourself first (in my case Henry), then your friends. They may know people in bands, or people in their band may be in another band so it opens doors to who you could sign. It's good if you know the first people signed so you can learn the ropes and they shouldn't mind too much.

  • Deep dives on Bandcamp, Spotify, Soundcloud: People with a small number of streams.

  • Demo Submissions: People may submit demos but this guy thinks it's better if you're the one to approach them.

- How to manage artist relationships and expectations

  • Be honest, transparent: it is going to take time for them to get where they want to be.

  • Be generous where you can be. Try to give them more than what they expect, then they will stay happy.

Royalties

REVENUE - EXPENSES = PROFIT

- Revenue will be: Streams/downloads or physical sales (albums, merch)

- Expenses will be: Production costs (photography, music vids, cover art), Promotional costs (ads) or merchandise costs

Marketing

- Social media

  • Be consistent: Post often without being annoying, keep your audience interested.

  • Use a sustainable strategy: Begin something you can withhold

  • Use hashtags that are relevant to you: People will find it if they look through hashtags they're interested in.

IT SUPPOSEDLY TAKES 7 INTERACTIONS BEFORE SOMEONE MAKES A PURCHASE!

- Email Marketing

  • Build a mailing list: you can find people at shows or from your sales

  • Build a separate one for your artists

- Local Marketing

  • Physical posters/postcards: if you have a cool graphic print it and hand out postcards with your graphic and contact info on, people will look into you further.

  • Local media/radio: This can be a great way to build a name for yourself.

Label Compilation

- Spotify playlist with you labels artists: send this to friends and family.

Different UK record labels

To create my website, I wanted to look at other UK record labels websites for inspiration. There were some I liked and some that i wasn't so sure on but it's good for me to look.

I love how bold this touchbar is, the use of colour catches your eye which I like a lot

Touchbar

This is very easy to navigate, it's clear what you're clicking on and where it's gonna lead.

I like how it's focused on the artists as well, it's not all about the label

I like this homepage too, it's not cluttered with writing and the photos bring attention to the artists

Screenshot 2021-04-29 at 13.19.02.png

The homepage is focused on key information NOW meaning it's regularly updated with what is relevant

Homepage

I like it but I don't think it's very clear. It's not that easy to navigate

Homepage

I like this homepage, it's nice how simple it is

Homepage

Very easy to navigate

I also really like that there is easy access to videos from the artists, it's very much focused on the artists which I love.

Homepage

I like that there is a section on the homepage with things for sale from the label, the pictures are eye catching too

I really like the layout as well, it looks great and is very simple.

I love that the home page has artist playlists. It makes it so easy to listen to the artists.

Cult Records - https://cultrecords.com/

I really like the cult records website. I love the unique element of the radio station however, as I am currently running this record label by myself, I will do a monthly playlist of songs that I am listening to. It's not quite the same but I loved that element and wanted to do something along those lines myself.

I also really love how bold the website is, the logo is very simple but I like that. It's all very eye-catching and nice to look at. I wanted to have a look at what platforms they were across to see what socials I should put the record label on.

Instagram

Youtube

Their twitter is just for short updates as you have a character limit, it's mostly filled with pictures and short sentences which is what I think mine will have to be too. No one wants to read loads on twitter, they can visit the website if they want to read more.

Screenshot 2021-05-20 at 12.43.37.png

As you can see from the second photo, their captions are kept short and not piled with info. If people are interested in the post then you can click on the link in their bio and see more about it. I like this, I think it is more effective depending on the project.

I used an idea from Cult Records on my final website. I loved the idea of Cult Radio so i took the idea a tweaked it to what would be doable for me at this current time. I cannot run a radio at the moment so I adjusted it to a playlist: My monthly top ten tunes. This is just a bit of fun and lets the audience get to know me a bit more. This is my take on Cult Radio:
