Evaluation and Reflection

22.03.20

Tasks to complete this week:

I need to begin my research into starting up a record label. I also need to discuss further with Henry what my role in the music video will be. I also need to talk with students in the class I am helping.

Resources needed:

I will use youtube to research into the record labels. I have already found a few useful videos. For contacting the pther students I need gmail and Zoom.

How long will each task take?

The research may take a while, I will continue research until I feel I have sufficient knowledge. I will update my diaries accordingly.

Evaluation

I had a discussion with Henry and my role in the music video has changed. Jayden Curran (Henry's friend doing Creative Media at Chichester college) Is filming and editing the video. We are using my mood board for inspiration. I will be in the music video and will be promoting the video by doing a 50s style ad campaign. I will be involved in the creation and promotion, just not as much as I thought, however Jayden has more experience in video editing and it means I can focus on the other parts of this project more.

This week I joined the zoom call of the class that I am helping for this project. The class is Music performance and production level 3. I just introduced myself to them and said I'd be up to help with anything that they needed. In the evening I got contacted by two students in the class. One was Alicia Dutton who is a singer/songwriter. She wanted help with promotion for her upcoming single (dropping the 30th of April) and her EP (dropping the 28th of May, exactly a month after). This is something I am confident in helping with. The other was Elijah Debnam who wanted me to help book a slot for a performance at METFEST which is a festival at college. This is also something I am also confident with helping. I plan on meeting Alicia next week to discuss this further. I have spoken to Phil about the dates for METFEST and he will get back to me as soon as he knows.

This week I also began my research into starting a record label with Henry. I used Youtube for this and watched this video:

It was very helpful and I got a lot of information from it, it's definitely going to help me kickstart the label.

29.03.20

Tasks to complete this week:

This week I am having a meeting with Alicia Dutton that I need to complete some research for that prior. I also need to create social media accounts for Mellow Moon Music (the record label).

Resources needed:

I need Google for research and Social Media for creating accounts.

How long will each task take?

The research will take up to two hours and social media is quick and doesn't take too long to create account.

Evaluation

The first thing I did this week was create the social media handles. I made a gmail account first (mellowmoonmusicmgmt@gmail.com) so I could use that for creating the social media accounts. I also made an Instagram account (@mellowmoonmusic) and a twitter account (@mellowmoonmusi1). Lastly I made a Bandcamp account (@mellowmoonmusic) as this is a great website for artists. It is focused on the artists and not the listeners much like Spotify. Bandcamp successfully supports artists, giving them profit off of their music and making their merchandise very easily accessible. Bandcamp has accounts for listeners, artists and labels but you do have to pay monthly fees. When Henry has some finished songs then I will look into paying the monthly fees. Facebook for artists is often used for contact details as it's a more personal thing so I haven't created a Facebook, if I feel I need to later on then I will.

On Thursday I had the meeting with Alicia at college. It went really well!! I showed her the information I collected and we had a discussion about what she wanted. I suggested making some posters and promotional material and thought we could collaborate with Indy Brewer (an amazing artist photographer) so we could create some Instagram posts and posters. Indy was happy to collaborate. I booked a photography studio for the 29th of April in the morning so we could take some pictures. Indy also suggested using some of the live rooms at college as those could be a cool location for some shots. In our meeting we also spoke about booking a slot at METFEST as she may get a crowd and that could equal new fans and more listeners for her EP! This also gives me an opening to help promote this as well. I will be able to book a slot as soon as Phil gives us the contact details of Jo Leandon. We also spoke about sending her songs into local radio stations as it may get played.

05.04.20

Tasks to complete this week:

Complete some artwork for the logo and start the filming of Henry's video.

Resources needed:

I don't need to worry about equipment for the video as Jayden is recording it for his media course. I just need the dress I will be wearing and any other props that Henry may want me to bring.

How long will each task take?

The research will take up to two hours and social media is quick and doesn't take too long to create account.

Evaluation

So to begin this week I contacted an artist called Daisy Evans to do a piece of art for my logo. I was going to do it myself but I saw one of her drawings of a moon on her snapchat story and thought it would be perfect!!

06556806-BBAF-4547-BA84-0D2CE081D6C1.png

I contacted her asking if she'd be interested in doing it for some money and potential commission on merchandise if we end up using it for that. She said she would like £25 as it takes 4 hours which I was happy to do, it's also her first commission which was nice. I set her a deadline for the 28th of April so I have enough time to create the website.

We had our first day of filming this week. It was more of a test run than any actual filming. We set up the green screen for the first time and it wasn't what we wanted. It was too short so didn't run across the floor which is what we had in mind. Jayden filmed some shots of Henry from the waist up which looked good but Henry was very nervous and you could see as he wasn't looking into the camera. After a couple of run throughs we decided it would make more sense to come back next week with another green screen (so we could connect the two) and Henry wanted to run through the song a couple of times at home alone to gain his confidence in front of us.

12.04.20

Tasks to complete this week:

We need to begin filming for Henry's music video, I am not filming but I am helping out.

Resources needed:

We need Jayden's camera and all the set which Henry has already bought so we just need to set it up.

How long will each task take?

This will take place over a matter of days, and across some weeks for editing.

Evaluation

We tried filming again on the Thursday. We were setting up for around an hour and a half as we had to get a collection of Henry's plants from his studio along with his jukebox. I also bought a gun neon light to use as a prop from my house. We met Jayden at around 1pm and was setting up until 2:30pm, as we didn't have to rely on natural light due to the set at Henry's grandparent's cottage, we weren't in any rush. We only filmed a couple of run throughs before Jayden's camera battery ran out, he didn't bring a charger either so we couldn't continue. We were supposed to be continuing with the filming on Friday but it didn't go to plan unfortunately. Jayden got all the way to Chichester (halfway between his house and where we were filming) and forgot the battery he had left on charge so we couldn't film which was unfortunate.

26.04.20

Tasks to complete this week:

This week Indy is taking photos for Alicia Dutton. This is the key thing to do this week. I also need to book the stages for the bands for METFEST

Resources needed:

Indy will be taking the pictures and she is bringing her equipment. I may need to ask for Gels to create coloured lighting for the pictures but the photography technician at college will have that. I have booked a studio in preparation for the 29th. The stages are to be booked through a google form.

How long will each task take?

This task will only take one day. Indy's editing will take a little while though. The google form will not take long to do.

Evaluation

This was so successful! It was great to help out and very nice to see some of the outcome photos. We used Gel overlays for some cool lighting and did some basic studio shots with the white background. Alicia's confidence really grew during the shoot which was so nice to see, she did a couple of different outfits. I will use a photo to make some posters for Alicia's gig on the 19th of May.

The gig booking was very easy, Phil helped me decide a slot and one slot (for an hour) was enough for both my bands. 12:00-12:30 is for LayZ JET (they wanted a slot for 3 or 4, 3-4 minute long songs) and Alicia will have the slot afterwards which is 12:30-1:00pm.

03.05.20

Tasks to complete this week:

I plan on completing my logo this week. Daisy sent me the final drawing for the logo so now I just need to create one. Once I have created the logo I will also be beginning the website.

Resources needed:

I will use Canva for the logo as I have used Canva many times and find it easily accessible. I will use wix.com to create my website as, again, it is easily accessible and free to use unless I buy a domain.

How long will each task take?

The logo will take around an hour, maybe two. I will likely make 2 or 3 so I have some things to choose from. The website will be created over a few weeks, it's an ongoing project.

Evaluation

This was another successful week, I love the final logo, I think I did a good job. I also love the way it looks on the website. I made a lot of progress with the website and drew inspiration from Domino records for their sub categories and such. Here are some screenshots from the website:

10.05.20

Tasks to complete this week:

This week I need to create posters for Alicia's gig. I also need to film and edit a short promo clip of Henry playing a song off his newest EP to post on the social media accounts.

Resources needed:

I will be using Canva again to create the poster for the gig. For the clip I will use my phone to film and logic for the audio (so it sounds better than from a phone camera), to edit the clip I will either use iMovie (if I am at home) or Adobe Premiere (if I am at college). This is because I don't have Adobe Premiere on my laptop and have to pay a monthly fee if I want it on my laptop which I cannot afford at the minute. If I continue this project (which I hope to) then I will think of spending the money.

How long will each task take?

The poster will likely not take very long.

Evaluation

I was really happy with the outcome of the poster I made. I used canva and used a photo taken by Indy Brewer for the background:

EFDE8782-993B-419C-8F47-B66987D7091B.png

However this week I didn't complete all the tasks I wanted to. I didn't have the time to get the video of Henry for a promo on the website, so will have to do that next week. The problem of time management seems to keep arising so that is something I need to work on.

17.05.20

Tasks to complete this week:

This week is the week of the two gigs at college. Both Alicia Dutton and LayZ JET are performing on the outdoor stage one after the other on the 19.05.21 (Wednesday) from 12:00 (LayZ JET first) with Alicia following at 12:30. I would also like to get a promo clip of Henry performing for the record label.

Resources needed:

For the promo vid I will need to use a tripod and my phone. I will be using Logic to record the audio so that it sounds the best it can. To edit the video after I will probably use iMovie as it's what I have on my computer. I would rather use Adobe Premier but I don't have that at home.

How long will each task take?

The editing will likely take longer than the recording of the promo video. I will probably complete this task over the space pf 2 days.

Evaluation

This week I completed everything that I set out to which is better than last week. I recorded and edited the promotion video for the record label. I also attended both gigs. The gigs went really well, both performers were really good and there was a small crowd which grew as people heard stuff going on outside. It was nice to get to know new musicians during this experience and actually be involved with some live music which hasn't been possible for the last year.

This week I also filmed and edited the video for the record label. It turned out really well, it was just a stripped back acoustic version of a song that is going to be coming out on Henry's upcoming EP. I used Logic for the audio and ran two mics through it. One for the guitar and one for the vocals. I also set up a tripod for my phone to record the videos. For the set we just cleared a space in henry's studio and moved in some plants and lights to make it look nice. We also used a studio light to put behind the camera to light up the shot a bit better or else it would've been really dark in the room. Here's some of the pictures of the set up:

24.05.20

Tasks to complete this week:

This week is just finishing bits off. I need to change my Bandcamp account from a fan account to an artists account. I also need to post the sneak peek to Instagram

Resources needed:

I will only need Bandcamp for this and Instagram for the video

How long will each task take?

Both tasks will take around 10 minutes each

Evaluation

This week went well as I only had one task to do. It didn't take long as all I had to do was create a new account but it's called the same thing so was very simple. : https://mellowmoonmusic.bandcamp.com/
Posting the video was simple and a good way to start up the space.

Final Evaluation

Overall I am very pleased with the outcome of my Final Major Project. Looking back at my proposal, things developed and changed quite a bit; Originally, I wanted to create an interactive website. I also wanted to be involved with many different people and was ready to develop ideas as the project continued.

Henry Barnes was the first student I began working with, he wanted help with creating a record label and a music video for an original song he was working on. These were both things outside of my comfort zone as I had never been involved with either of these things before. I ended up doing the record label alone with Henry being the only artist with the label for now. I was also involved in the creation of Henry's music video but not so much as I thought I was going to be, however this became a good thing as I had more time to focus on other elements of the project. During this project I also worked with a local artists for the logo and a student from Chichester college doing creative media so I worked with a few people which I really enjoyed. I really enjoyed working with Henry. Both things were new experiences and I definitely learnt a lot through extensive research and through experience. A problem that arose during this project was time management; I work 4 days a week so I couldn't always be there to help with the video and couldn't always do things in the time frame that I wanted. However working with Henry was overall a really good experience and I wish to continue the record label with him even once this college year is over, I think it could go somewhere.

I also worked alongside Alicia Dutton and LayZ JET, both artists on the music performance course. Alicia approached me to help with promoting some of her upcoming music, I had promoted an event before but had not been involved with promoting music so to help her successfully I needed to do some research before we met. We decided on getting Indy Brewer to take some photos for posters and for Instagram which turned out amazing! We used a space I hadn't used before which was the studios at college, it was a lot of fun because I helped with choosing lighting and with the reflector. We also decided to book a slot a METFEST so that Alicia could perform so people that might not know who she is could hear her singing some of her original songs. I was really happy with the outcome of working with Alicia, this is because I think we both took some positive things from it so it was gratifying.
I also worked with LayZ JET but very briefly compared to my involvement with others. They didn't really ask for a lot from the beginning, they only wanted me to book them a slot to perform at METFEST so that's all I did. However Indy came along and too some photos of them which was nice as they got some amazing shots to post on their social media. However the problem of time management came to light again when I was working with them as they wanted a poster for their gig (they told me on the Friday) and I was working across the weekend until Tuesday and the gig was on Wednesday, therefore I had no time to produce a poster for them. This was the only problem during this project though.

Overall this project has been a lot of fun! I have really enjoyed learning new things and experiencing a different side to event's management and finding out how to do it all by myself, it's felt very rewarding when things start to turn out well. I seemed to excel in the creative aspects of this project, with the overall presentation being something I am truly proud of. I also loved working with loads of different people, working with other creatives is so exciting, everyone spilling with ideas and art, it's what I love to be around. The thing I feel I need to work on is time management as it was a problem a couple of times. However the positives greatly out weigh the negatives for me, I have taken a lot of good things from this project and the fact that I have done something that I wish to continue working on is positive for me. There's still a lot of space for me to improve and grow but I believe experience will be my greatest teacher. I can't wait to see what I end up doing.
