WIRED

PROPOSAL:

So this project is one that is taking place outside of MET FEST. The idea is to hold a live music night for newly emerging artists as a place to showcase their talents. This should hopefully help them gain more followers and a wider audience. It is different from my past event which was a club night so the experience from this will be very useful. Instead of collaborating with Ellie on this project as "Stacey's Room", I will be doing this on my own. I already have a few artists in mind as I know some smaller bands (Pindrop, pinkpirate) but would need to arrange a few more for the night as I wanted the night to go on from 7pm-11pm and two acts cannot fill that. I won't be selling tickets prior to the event, this time they will be sold on the door and they won't be as expensive as this time I hope to have less costs.

What tasks will you plan to do this week?

  1. Sort out artists

  2. Sort out venue

What resources do you need?

  1. Just a good network

  2. Again I will need a good network of venues within my local area

How much time will each task take?

  1. This is a long task and may even take me all week

  2. This shouldn't take me too long, a day at most

Evaluation: I sorted out all of the artists in this first week. I contacted Pindrop and pinkpirate on instagram as I have spoken to each of them before and they were both excited to help me out and perform. I also asked if they knew anyone else that I could contact who would be interested in doing a set. Pindrop gave me Mia Nicholls, a folk artist who is known for her acoustic sets and original songs that are very pretty. Pinkpirate gave me Ella Wingfield, a Chichester based artist who posts covers on her Instagram. Both Mia and Ella were up for doing the gig. Mia gave me another artist called Martha Buchanan and that was all I needed for the time slot. Having five artists means they get a 30 minute slot each and that leaves time for a change over between each performer.

Once I sorted the artists I discussed using my dads place "Coast" as the venue for this event. Coast has had a few live music nights but they primarily book DJs, however my dad liked the idea of this event and thought it would be a good opportunity for both me and for the venue to get out there more as a live music venue. There is no stage but coast is an intimate venue that would be lovely for an event such as this one. The venue was very easy to sort as my dad owns Coast which is lucky.

What tasks will you plan to do this week?

  1. Poster

What resources do you need?

  1. Canva

How much time will each task take?

  1. Around 4 hours

Evaluation: It took me a while to develop a poster that I actually liked. I started with an image of wires as the background which I applied text over the top. I was messing around with various fonts for a very long time and ended up on a font called 'Bungee' which you can see I used across all the posters in the end. The first poster was chaotic and unclear and I don't think it was very eye catching, so that is why I tried something a little different the next time. I scrapped the first poster as it was too messy and hard to read, so for the second time I went for a simpler design. I kept the same font but this time had a plain background and a simple image of wires across the middle. There was still something missing so I scrapped the second poster and decided to a try a third. I asked a friend for some ideas and he said to use the image of wires sparking and the words being created from the spark. He chose the purple image and the different font which was called 'Freckle Face'. There was just something that wasn't right about it, the colours and the font made me think of halloween and it came across as if it was supposed to be scary. However I did like the image with the sparking wire so I interpreted that in my own way. I found a different picture on google images of wires sparking and changed the font back to my original favourite 'Bungee'. I liked the way I placed the writing on poster number 3 and I liked the box as it broke up the poster a bit more, so i transferred my ideas from that to poster 4. The final poster is the most bold of the lot and it achieves what I am aiming for. Next week I will arrange the equipment and will start the promotion.

What tasks will you plan to do this week?

  1. Arrange the equipment

  2. Start promoting

What resources do you need?

  1. A network of people with resources

  2. Printed posters and social media platforms

How much time will each task take?

  1. Only a day

  2. Ongoing throughout the project

Evaluation: Firstly I emailed Charlie (who is a music technician at Northbrook MET) about using the college equipment. This week I didn't get a reply but I believe that is because it is half term so he wasn't responding to any college emails.

The promotion began and I created a Facebook event from the Coast Facebook page. This can show you if people are interested and who has said they're coming and makes it easy to share and re-share. On Instagram I began promotion by just sharing the poster and tagging the artists involved. The artists shared this post on their stories as well. That is all the promotion that I planned on doing this week, pushing the event too much with the same image may put people off or just get bored of seeing the same thing on their timeline which is not desirable. The Instagram story I posted means that people viewing can discover the artists by clicking on their names and it will take them to their page  so they can hear their music.

  1. Promotion

  2. Finalise things with Charlie

What resources do you need?

  1. Social media and posters

  2. Email

How much time will each task take?

  1. Ongoing until the event

  2. Finished by the end of the week

Evaluation: Over this week I did a little more promotion. I asked every artist to send me a short video of them performing so that I could promote them on my social media. All artists sent me a video within this week but I wasn't planning on releasing all the videos in the first week, I just planned on staggering them by releasing them on my story. I also released them onto my Facebook to reach a bigger audience. On my Instagram I posted about the song "nowhere" by pinkpirate because it has been released on all platforms. Pinkpirate is the only artist who has songs released for streaming so this is good to push as people can view her music and see if they're interested. I was planning on releasing two different videos a week so I also shared a video of Ella Wingfield. Next week I am planning on releasing two more videos and as it is the countdown to the event next week, I will push the event as much as I can and will ask the artists to do the same.

This week I finalised some things with Charlie Stout (music technician) at my college. He replied to my email and said that equipment was able to be used from the college so that helped me out a lot. This means that I won't have to hire any equipment and reduces the costs of my event. The only thing that was needed was transport to and from the event for the equipment which my dad said he could provide. The artists all said they'd bring their own instruments.

What tasks will you plan to do this week?

  1. Promotion

What resources do you need?

  1. Social media and posters

How much time will each task take?

  1. Ongoing until the event

Evaluation: This week I promoted in the same way as the week before. This week I only promoted one artist and that was Pindrop. I shared a short clip of them performing an original song to my instagram story and made sure to tag them and coast so people could access that information easily. If you tag people and places then that means that viewers won't have to go out of their way to search the information, which a lot of people can't be bothered to do so this means everything is accessible. I also promoted an original song written by pinkpirate on my instagram story as it is on all major music streaming platforms.

What tasks will you plan to do this week?

  1. Promotion

  2. Meet with Charlie Stout to discuss what equipment will be needed

What resources do you need?

  1. Social media and posters

  2. Knowledge on the venue and what equipment they have

How much time will each task take?

  1. Ongoing until the event

  2. Just a quick meeting to finalise everything

Evaluation: This week I released the final two promo videos onto my instagram story. These were for pinkpirate and Martha Buchanan. I felt like I had to push promotion even more this week as it is the last week of being able to do so and I saw posters around college for another college event happening on the same night. It is taking place at Factory Live and is hip hop and R&B so at least the genres are different. I posted a videos of Martha and pinkpirate on different days throughout the week as a last pull for viewers.

I also had a quick meeting with Charlie Stout this week. We spoke in person about what equipment was going to be needed for my event. No instruments were required as all the acts were bringing their own. All that was needed were 2 amps, 1 mic, cables and a mic stand. Charlie also arranged that a student called Louis from the music tech course would come and set up. He would bring his own mixing desk so that wouldn't need to be provided and all I needed to pay him was money for parking. Everything was finalised with Charlie so no more meetings would be required.

16.03.20

This week I had to postpone my live music event due to coronavirus (COVID-19). The pandemic started in China and spread from country to country very quickly. When the virus hit Europe citizens became fearful and started staying in their home with fear of contracting the sometimes fatal virus. There were a few cases in England at the beginning of March but no one thought the cases would increase to the number that they have.

On the 16th of March, Boris Johnson advised members of the public to avoid "offices, pubs and travelling". This statement means that many of the people who would've come to the event may fear travelling on public transport or even fear being in the venue. All performers were travelling from around the Chichester area meaning that they may have to use public transport (like many of the people coming), instead of putting people at risk, I decided to postpone the event. This is the last thing I wanted to do but it is the only thing I could do really. A member of Pindrop would not have been able to make it anyway because he has asthma and doing the gig would put him at too much risk.

I announced this news on my Instagram story and posted about it on Facebook. I will rearrange a date for the event in the future once the Coronavirus is less of a risk and people begin going out again.
