PROJECT 2 PROPOSAL

Part 1: Summary of work and skills so far

Open evening:

I was not part of the majority of the planning for the open evening as I joined the college about 4 weeks late. However I did help out with the more practical side of the planning. I spray painted the backdrop of the photobooth, discussed scaffolding and brought in props to be used by the visitors.

On the evening, I helped out with the photobooth. The photobooth was the least successful thing on the open evening with only bands and existing students at Northbrook taking part, however this is understandable because many people came with their parents and not many people want to take part in a photobooth with their parents. Because of this, we ended up leaving earlier than expected.

As an individual on the night, I could’ve been more encouraging to visitors so that they would have had their picture taken, however at the start of the open evening we were standing and trying to encourage visitors over but as the evening continued, we got disheartened and just ended up sitting around. The prepration of the open evening went very well, both as an individual and as a group. The set-up of the photobooth was perfect and it overall looked very good and the props, when used, went down well.

Other tasks:

I have started tasks within project one that will be ongoing for a while. This includes adding to the Ecosystem and the Event Research task. I have only done Worthing as an ecosystem so far but will continue to venture to places like Brighton and Southampton and future locations I may plan living like Bristol. I have only researched 2 events and will need to research more to see how they could improve to help me in the future.

Summary of skills:

As a group we all handed out the tasks equally and made sure we communicated in and outside of college to make the event right. We communicated about when things were happening (when we needed to be in for spray painting) and who was bringing in props and things along those lines. We practiced good organisational skills within our group and there were no arguments within our group. It went well. I have also gained the skill of creating a website which I will continue using across the 2 years.

Part 2: Proposal for project 2

Focus:

For our second project we could either act as a record label and help and emerging artist release music on Bandcamp or Spotify or we can organise and put on an event. I have chosen to put on an event with Ellie, a fellow student.

We are planning on doing a jungle themed event. This Jungle theme will entail jungle and drum and bass music with jungle decor and encouragement to dress up to match the theme.

Time management:

The deadline for project 2 is Friday the 7th of February so everything will have to be done by then (even the event). Ellie and I will have to have a weekly meeting which will likely take place on days we are at college because we live so far apart (me in Worthing and her in Lewes) so Tuesdays or Wednesdays will be our meeting days. We will document these in either a notebook or on a document then type them up as the planning process.

Evaluation throughout the project:

  • Are you on schedule?

  • What is going well?

  • Is the project changing as it develops?

  • Final overall evaluation.

Research needed:

Similar events -

  • Kings of the Rollers (and more):

This is an event held at the Concorde 2 in Brighton on the 29th of November. Concorde 2 often do drum and bass and jungle events. The drum and bass events are mostly 18s and over because of how late the events are held until. The event goes from 11pm-4am. Bars and clubs, by the law, are not allowed to have people under the age of 18 on the premises past 11pm so that is the reason for the age limit.

Most drum and bass events sell tickets for their events which is what I would have to do to make the money back on the venue. They start cheap at £12 and end up at £16 on final release.

  • Jungle Cakes Takeover:

This event has already happened in September. There were multiple jungle DJs (Ed Solo, Deekline, Serial Killaz and Benny Page). Multiple DJs are often the way to go with drum and bass and jungle events. This is because there are different variations of music and with multiple DJs you get more of a variation of music so more people are likely to enjoy it. The average rating out of 100% was 66%. A review said: "not enough jungle for an event called jungle cakes". This is useful to know because people want what is advertised. It was another 11pm-4pm event which shows most drum and bass events go on all night until the early hours of the morning.

  • Benny L album launch:

This is a drum and bass artist's release party. It is held at the Steel Yard in London on the 23rd of November. It's a 10pm-6am event, another late one and it's a rum and bass event so they seem to go hand in hand. The minimum age you can be is 18, another thing common with these events. This event requires tickets to attend and tickets are released at 5 separate times starting at £9.05 and on final release £22.25. Everything but the final release has sold out which shows that this event will likely be successful or at least it is money wise. There are many people DJing so the variety in the line up will have likely caused this event to sell and be popular.

Resources:

Venues often used for drum and bass -

  • Concorde 2 (a mix of music the occasional drum and bass event)

  • Volks nightclub (free before midnight drum and bass on Thursdays) ABLE TO HIRE FOR £100 AND YOU GET THAT BACK IF 120 PEOPLE TURN UP

  • The Arch (Drum and bass events across the year)

  • The latest music bar (place out to hire for anyone)

Online platforms -

Potential costs:

There are many costs that will come with putting on an event. The venue will have to be paid for unless it's the Volks club because as a student you can put on events for £100 and if 120 people show up then you get your deposit back. This is good for us because we will be taking money out of our own pockets to put this event on. Other costs could include decor, cost of artists and photographers/videographers.

Individual roles:

The management of the event will be shared between Ellie and I. We are both planning the event and using our varied skills to put on an event together.

Finished Product: The finished product will hopefully be a successful party. The judgement will be made if there is anything that goes wrong on the night and what everyone says about it.
